A Father’s Prayer

Then Manoah prayed to the LORD: “O Lord, I beg you, let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born.” Judges 13:8

The following prayer was written by General Douglas MacArthur, a hero of World War II, on behalf of his son whom he loved dearly. If you’re a parent you may want to use it as the basis for your own prayers for your children: ‘Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory. Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know You…Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail. Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the lessons of the past. And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength. Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain.”’

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the Father that I can try to model with my children! In Jesus’ Name, Amen

  1. As the mother of 3 sons, two who are retired and one in his 50’s, I really appreciated this prayer which made me realize that my job isn’t ended yet, I still need to pray for my sons daily. Thank you!

Tim: What a marvelous surprise. Your publishing of General Douglas McArthur’s prayer buckled my knees. I gave a printed copy to my dad more than sixty years ago.

He was consumed with more than just a few personal issues. Since then, each of children and grand children have a copy.

At this time, amidst all that is challenging us, publishing it now has brightened my life. Additionally, thank you for your continued out reach to us all.

    Thank you very much.

    Paul
